Project overview

The Eileen Avenue proposal turns an existing garage behind the main house into a 324-square-foot accessory dwelling. The conversion works within the square footprint, bringing the essentials of a small home together in one compact plan.

The entrance opens to the living area, with the kitchen beside it. A sleeping area occupies the back of the room, alongside a separate bathroom and closet. The elevations show the entry door and adjacent window, additional windows on two other sides, and a largely closed fourth wall beneath a hipped roof.

Design decisions

  1. Use the existing footprint

    The existing and proposed plans share an 18-by-18-foot outline, allowing the change from garage to dwelling to be read directly.

  2. Make room for daily life

    Living, cooking and sleeping areas share the compact interior, with the bathroom and closet enclosed alongside them.

  3. Give the conversion an entrance

    The west elevation places a door and window together, marking the entry to the new dwelling.
